Chapter 12

JOURNEY

I frown at the number in red at the bottom of the spreadsheet, scrolling back through the numbers I entered, hoping that I missed a zero somewhere. Nope, it’s all correct, and it’s not pretty. The feed distributor who brought hay recently said that prices are up thanks to fuel costs and general inflation, but even accounting for that, I don’t have a fucking clue how Uncle Milt has kept this place running all these years.

I glance around the shabby kitchen, the faint sound of Cole taking a sledgehammer to the walls in the back bedroom reaching my ears. I guess it’s easy to see where he let things slip when money got tight.

Jane had said that the alpacas have been lucrative enough to cover costs, but the fleece didn’t bring in nearly as much as I was hoping. Even if I were to start booking them for parties again, I’d have to have them doing two a day to cover all these costs.

I sigh and lean forward, bracing my elbows on the table and rubbing my eyes, easing some of the strain from staring at the computer screen all morning trying to make these numbers make sense.

There has to be income potential somewhere that I’m overlooking. It’s not like I need to get rich off this place. I’ve socked away a decent nest egg over the years thanks to my blog, and I have no issue with living a modest life here on the farm, but with the balance sheet the way it is right now, I’ll be drained dry and selling off the animals one by one to cover the bills within a few years.

I close my laptop and stand up from the table. There’s an answer here somewhere, I just need to find it. Of course, the other option is to cut my losses, sell it all now and hop on the next plane to anywhere-but-here. Everything inside of me immediately rebels at that idea. I made a commitment to this place, and I’m not ready to give up so easily.

The memory of the other night in the basement flashes through my mind, the vibration of Red’s moans on my lips, the hard outline of his erection against mine… My skin heats and my heart beats faster. It’s been nearly a week and neither of us have brought it up again. Things almost feel normal between us… Almost.

I don’t think I’m ready to run away from whatever that might be either, even if I’m still confused as fuck.

The heavy sound of Cole’s footsteps moves down the hallway towards the kitchen. He appears in the doorway a minute later, lifting the mask from his mouth and pulling his shirt up to wipe the sweat off of his face.

I glance at his exposed belly, just to test myself. He’s fit without being ripped, just a little roundness to his belly and a trail of golden hair leading from his belly button, disappearing below his waistline. He’s attractive, but there’s no reaction inside of me.
